Creating a virtual drive

  reddwarfcrew 21:41 09 May 05

I have a folder in my E drive that I would like to make a virtual drive (J) for a temporary period.

Is this possible?

I am currently doing it by having the folder on an external HDD and changed the letter of this drive to J.

Use Windows help - search for create virtual drive, read about the SUBST command, and see if this helps.

I just tried it and it works (winXP) - open a command prompt, type in the command , and hey presto it appears in Explorer (much to my amazement, as I'd almost forgotten this old DOS command.)

I had already tried the windows help, but it didn't find anything for virtual drives.

I'm on XP home, are you on home or pro?

XPPro -

Open a command box and type

subst j: c:/path [enter]

where j: is the drive you want and c:/path is the path of the folder you want

To delete the virtual drive, type

subst j: /d [enter]

In Help just search for subst it gets you straight there.
