creating partition via disk management

  Leehndrsn 01:24 02 Aug 06

I have a maxtor 250gb drive and windows gives me about half by default leaving unallocated space, can I merge the unallocated to form the full 250 drive or do I need to have 2 partitions and how would I be best going about it, would a second partition just need formatting or would it need cartain files on it?

Many thanks

Is this when installing?

If so you need XP service pack 2 disk to find the full volume of the drive.

To merge the partition, you would need third party software, like acronis disk director. This would make the disk a full 250Gb.

To make a second partition active. Right click my computer > manage > disk management. In the new right hand window look for the unallocated space of the new drive. Right click the unallocated space and pick create new partition ( it may be just format ). Follow the wizard and the rest of the space will be a available.

Great thanks, XP is already installed so I think i'll just create a second partition, have used third party software before but it had some problems so i'm a little sceptical on using it again. Thanks again
