Creating a new icon?

Sorry I'm sure the answer's already here but I can't find it!

How do I create a new icon (.ico) file if I've got a .jpg or .gif? What size, etc does it have to be?

I've got Paint Shop Pro 4, can I create an icon in that?

Is it 50x50,

anyway, just export or save as .ico

Create a new file 32 pixels x 32 pixels, enlarge it to about 10x with the magnifing glass tool, this makes it easier to see. Turn on the grid and set it to be 1 pixel x 1 pixel. The grid should now be 32 x 32 pixels wide. Create your icon, save it as a Bitmap. Go to where you've saved it and change the extension from bmp to ico, you will get a warning about changing extensions, ignore it and that's your icon file created.

Icon Forge

It allows you to create your own or import files and then lets you resize and touch up.

Or as Gaz 25 says resize your jpg/gif and just save as .ico

Thats it 32 x 32

As far as I know they have to be Bitmaps, prior to changing the extension to .ico, not jpgs or gifs. They wont work as icons, otherwise.
