Create a signature

Could someone please give advise on how to create a copy of my signature that can be used to 'sign' a document / letter created on the computer.

In the past I have tried this but have never been very successful, it always turns out wishy-washy and does not look very good.

I've got a good scanner so that will not be a problem. What do I use, pencil, fountain pen, felt pen, biro, permanent marker, then what format does it need to be created in, gif, jpg. Do I scan in B&W or colour, you get the idea, I haven't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As file size should not be a problem, do your normal signature with a black pen onto a smooth white non-glossy paper then scan it at 1200 dpi. Keep the file a a grey scale bitmap image. You may have to play with the contrast on the scan to get the picture to match the paper that you print letters on. If you print on anything other than white then you will have problems matching the background colour and texture.
