A couple of weeks ago, Avast told me that there was a trojan (CC.Agent.MS!IK) on my machine. It was or was in:- C:\ProgramFiles\Crawler\Toolbar\ctbr.dll

Avast duly removed it but I am wondering what Crawler is or does and do I need on my machine?

Thanks in advance for any guidance/opinion.

Two things there, apparently:

The first is a bit vague, and possibly a false positive. The other seems to be a radio site, now defunct perhaps.

The Crawler Toolbar used to come bundled with Spywareterminator,if the box upon installation was not would have had the crawler toolbar installed.

Do you have Spywareterminator installed ?

But can be disguised as malware also click here
