Crashes,Freezes & No shows

I have had a couple of threads on my current problem but my hair is now getting very sparse and I still haven't finally resolved it.
The pc was playing up and getting more unstable with frequent freezes and crashes, so I reformatted and started from scratch (3 times so far)but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
I am getting the position where I click on a desk top icon and the icon disappears. Click to close a window and the screen freezes or goes black and monitor says "check connection".
Sometimes the screen will only stay in 16 colours 640x480 and nothing else with a window saying wrong drivers.
With one monitor it only booted as far as the splash screen then went black with the monitor indicating lost connection so I've tried a second monitor but still the problems except that it does actually get to the desk top.
This is happening even after just loading windows, with mobo drivers and graphics card software only.
I now wonder if the mobo or graphics card is suspect?
I have run some utilities but they don't indicate anything wrong.
Mobo is an Abit KT7A with an ATI A-I-W graphics card, built 2001.
I realise it is a bit of a long shot but perhaps someone can be definite on the likely cause or how I can isolate it.
Thanks

Probably the best course of action would be to buy a new graphics card (you can get them quite cheaply these days). If it doesn't work then it may well be your motherboard or hard drive. I think the only way forward is to use process of elimination...perhaps someone else can give better advice. I think your problem would make me pull my hair out too :(

Have to agree with D the C. Process of elimination is the only recourse. However, before getting any new bits have you checked that the graphics card is seated properly. I presume this is separate graphics card and not onboard! You could try removing it wiping the contacts carefully and reseating. Is it AGP or PCI? ( sorry dont know much about this card). If PCI try fitting in another slot - might have to reinstall drivers after this.
