CPU usage high

When I am ripping CD's to Real Player on my PC the CPU usage goes up to between 90 and 100%, and sometimes crashes halfway through, I don't run any other programs during the rip.
My Compaq PC is about 4-5 years old now, but I have upgraded the RAM to 512 and USB ports have also been upgraded, but I am concerned about the CPU usage, is there anything I can do to get this down?
Other than this it is working just fine. I would like to get a new one but can't afford it just yet.
