I have a socket A Gigabyte M/B with a max cpu rating of I Ghz, I presently run a Duron 800. but have been offered a 1 ghz Athlon for £25. Apart from this cpu being unobtainable from most outlets is this a good deal, would I benefit from this faster cpu.

You would benefit from this CPU, its a lot faster, its not just going from a 800 to a 1000 it also going from a Duron to an Athlon. I would say its worth it, £25 is not a great deal after all. But check if you'd need a new heatsink and fan as that would add about £10 to the cost.

I agree. The difference is not so much speed, as power. Many Athlons also run at 266 Mhz FSB instead of 200Mhz with Durons.

As the Android has said, I would check which flavour the CPU is and whether your motherboard will support it: 200 or 266?
