CPU types

This probably sounds really thick! I have got somewhat out of date re:processors, and I wondered if someone could tell me something about Socket A processors (or indeed all the others). Which need heat sinks and which not? Are there different types of heat sink now?
Which ones are slots and which are similar to socket 7 ?
I would be grateful for a simple (as possible) explanation please.
