CPU is showing high usage on Task Manager

I am running XP on old Dell PC with Pentium 4 3.00GHz CPU. My task manager often shows 100% CPU usage and my screen freezes a lot. Almost always my McAfee Antivirus (BT Net Protect Plus) is responsible for showing at least 50% up to 80% of total CPU capacity. I regularly run Winaso Reg Cleaner, Malwarebytes, CCleaner etc to try to keep my computer clutter and bug free. Is McAfee typically a high CPU usage user, and would anyone recommend using an alternative Antivirus.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Does sound like it may be scanning in the background

I gave up on Mcafee a long while ago and recent reviews rate it poorly Would be tempted to uninstall and replace with free Avast.
