CPU runs 100% when connected to internet

laptop running XP home:
Windows folder creates "smtXXX.tmp" files every few seconds - there are hundreds of them! It seems to be running normally, but when connected to internet the CPU runs 100% and everything slows down.
I have run latest Norton, Spybot, CCleaner and A2 and all report clean. Norton detects a "w32.wilab" nasty but cannot find any info about it.
Please can someone help -I'm getting desperate !!

Many many thanks -I'm about to try it.

Spent hours looking for a "dxterm5.exe" file in Reg - eventually found one. Removed it but it has made no difference. NAV still reports "W32.wilab" found on internet connection and I still get a 16 bit MS Dos subsystem report - "NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instuction" Any further thoughts?
