CPU ID message on boot up - what does it mean?

  JasonH 12:49 23 Oct 04

Hi all,

When I boot up my PC (XP Pro) I've noticed that recently on the memory check screen before windows loads I've started getting this message:

CPU ID: 0681>

Does anyone know what this referes to? Am I being warned of a fault or potential fault?

Thanks in advance

I might add that my processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2400+

In what form does the message appear? In a black screen, or in a screen on its own? Does the PC continue to boot, or do you have to press a key?

The CPU is usually the first item to be checked in POST.

Hi Graham,

Yeah, the message appears on the POST as:

<CPU ID: 0681>

Before it checks/verifies the harddrive.

I've only noticed it displaying this particular line recently.

Nothing to worry about as far as I know; mine has had something like that for as long as I can recall...

If the PC continues to boot normally, I shouldn't worry about it.

You could look in System Restore for a significant event.

It's just an identifier number the bios uses to recognise the cpu, nothing to worry about at all.

and if you're really curious about how the bios recognises the processor have a read of click here

Thanks guys,

I consider this issue now resolved :-)
