just ordered a new cpu..for a failing old one, but just realized ...will it fit ? are they all the same size or not ?

Cpu do not go weak or failing. They just stop and the computer will not start. You cannot just buy any CPU hoping it will work in your computer

You need to check out the MOBO manual to see what it'll take.
But that said Woodchip's right, CPUs either work or they don't, what's the problem.

"Cpu do not go weak or failing. They just stop and the computer will not start."

Not strictly true, I have seen CPU's with failed cache memory which would boot up and then Windows would suggest that the registry was corrupt and offer to fix it, it worked for a short while but no amount of registry fixing completely solved the problem of constant errors, BSODs and so on.

The failed cache memory was diagnosed by turning it off in the BIOS, whereupon the PC then worked fine, albeit at a snail's pace, turning the cache memory back on resulted in the initial problem returning.
