could it be the battery?

I have a 4 year old Packard Bell laptop (easy note XV) running Win ME

the problem is that it cannot keep the date/time settings and when it re starts, it reverts back to 1 jan 1996 and the time to 0.00,

This plays havoc with antivirus etc and I need to get it sorted.

I would guess that it is the cmos battery that is knackered, but the question is where is it, is it easy to get to, or have I got to dismantle the whole thing

Also, could it be anything else?

Yes, most likely the CMOS battery.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, but any idea where abouts it may be located on a laptop?

I don't know that particular laptop, but you are right in assumming it is the cmos battery.

You will probably see underneath your laptop a rectangular metal cover, held on by a number of small screws.

This narmally houses the memory strips, and sometimes the CPU, also the battery you mention.
This stops you having to take the whole thing apart.

You doneed to get it sorted, or your bios may go haywire.

Best wishes
George
