cost of ink for printers

A friend has just asked my advice re a new colour inkjet printer; (His previous printer was a Canon and I use a Canon)I've lent him some back copies of PCAdvisor. But the problem , as we know so often in this forum, is the high cost of cartridges for some models. Recent buying advice in PCA has put HP Deskjet 5940 as best buy; 6940 as next best - though ink costs £21 a time for black; whereas the Canon Pixma black ink is half that price, but cost of initial purchase is over twice that of the HP. Any advice please? Oh, by the way, I know about buying cheaper compatible inks - I always do that; so an additional question therefore is what would be the diference in price for compatibles for these 2 makes of printer.
