Corrupted files amongst other things

The message below is from a friends sister who is having problems with her computer it is a new dell so I am surmising it is winXP she has although she does'nt say that in her message.

My new Dell has 128mb ram. I bought 256 and put it in, the computer diddn't like

I swapped the modules over so that it read the 256mb first. It still didn't
like it. I took out the 256 and put the 128 back where it started. The computer
then did a check of the files, came up with something about a file being missing
or corrupted.

I left the room , came back and was faced with just the blue
windows/microsoft screen prompting me to click the user name. However both my
and my partner's user names and icons had gone and therefore I cannot gain
access to the computer. I pressed control alt del a couple of times and the
screen box came up asking to input the password - did so and still no joy
(unless the password was wrong - my partner's- tried various ones that it could
have been), anyway phoned Dell and was taken through the process of checking for
errors with a disc and then reinstalling the 'stuff' with another disc.

Still no
luck and same problem. Dell then said that the HARD DRIVE MIGHT NEED WIPED,
seems a bit extreme to me. So there you have it, any ideas,
Yours Hopefully,

This was a question asked and a solution which may apply, though the answer was deep and poss could cause problem with someone new.If it is a last resort before formatting disk then nothing to lose??

Read it for yourself see what you think.

(Question) I recently got a new laptop with Windows XP, the password has been changed so I cannot even logon into the computer or anything, is it possible to get passed it??? Answer plus follow the link.

Bypassing XP logon??

You do not need to reinstall if you forgot the admin password.

There is a boot disk you can download at:

that will let you reset the password of any account on NT4, Windows2000 or XP.

Just follow all the default settings which are for the admin account. Used it many times with great success.I also made a bootable CD image you can download from.
