Copying film on to CD or DVD

I have been recording some short films on to an Archos - timing varies from 25 minutes to 40 minutes.
I transfer the films from the Archos on to a file and then I want to copy these separately to disks, but some are too big for a 700MB disk. I have an NTI CD & DVD Maker - Gold which came installed when I bought my computer (Windows XP Home) and have also tried just a straight copy from file to disk, but obviously with the same problem.
Is there any way I can compress the film, so that it will fit on to a standard disk? I realise that this would reduce the quality, but might have to live with that.
I can use a DVD disk, but was hoping to use a CD disk, as it is cheaper!!
Sorry if this sounds a little garbled, but hope you can understand it and provide some guidance.
