If you connect an external CD Drive by USB to, as in this case a laptop, can you copy directly to the internal CD/RW , or do you have to copy to the Hard Drive first.

With thanks

You should be able to copy on the fly, but it's *safer* to copy to the hard disk first.

Copying on the fly can mean the odd ruined disk, as buffer underruns are more likely, and other problems can crop up. Just delete the file from the hard disk after you've recorded it to keep your hard disk from filling up with rubbish.

nah you should be able to do it without a problem. done it with pc and external drive copied over 50 cds all well. and it is faster too.

Some ext hd caddies aren't all they're cracked up to be. I sometimes could get a decent data flow and at other times zilch. Depends on if hd gets too hot (no cooling) or if driver's dodgy.
