is it possible to record/save streamed content when it is played within the browser rather than if it opens in win media player.

I have used Audacity to record audio from streamed radio broadcast. Look for the Stereo Mix setting.

Apart from using the likes of Audacity to "capture" the audio throughput, there is nothing that can be done for files that don't get cached. And most streams don't get cached; the BBC Radio content being a good example. You can save those, but it's effectively just a launch file with no actual content.
