copy list of cells excel to word

I am trying to copy a list of names (col A) in Excel 2007 and paste them into a Word 2007 table.
When I paste the names into the Word table,they paste into the top left cell only,and move the rest of the columns down.
Putting it another way it seems to be pasting the data into one cell rather than rows of cells. Hope that makes sense to you.

In the Word table, select the cells that you want to paste in then paste.

No problem. I have struggled like you in the dim and distant past until I stumbled upon the solution. This sort of thing just doesn't seem to be documented.
