converting a drive to NTFS from FAT32

One of my flock have asked me how to do this to an external drive.
This I can help him with. Remove existing 'stuff' and reformat in disk management.

But I get a niggle that to do this would not necessarily a goof ides.
I seem recall that FAT32 is universal file type where as to make a drive NTFS- could give rise to read write issues.
Can any one clarify this before get down to it with him?

You are probably thinking of the fact that you normally cannot change back to FAT32 unless you use a utility such as Partition Magic.
