converting AVI to MPEG

  Rogerfredo 09:11 25 Aug 04

I have been trying to transfer some dv tapes to my computer to burn a DVD.
I have captured the video successfully using Windows Movie maker, and the resulting AVI file plays successfully using Windows Media player.
However, when I use a second program to convert from AVI to MPEG for burning, the MPEG file shows excellent video, but the audio soundtrack is like the chipmunks (for those of you old enough to know what I mean).
Any ideas where things are going wrong?
Any (preferably free) software for conversion that I could try?
