Convert Excel to MS Works

A friend has taken some files in Excel format to France. Her parents computer has MS Works, thus no Excel.

The Excel reader click here will allow the files to be viewed but not edited.
Is there way to convert the files so that they can be worked on in MS Works?

Which version of Works?

Thanks VoG

Pass! I only received a mail saying 'help'.
A little further investigaton through MS says that
Open an Excel File
You are able to open Excel (.xls) files directly in Works Spreadsheet in Works 2000. To open an Excel file in Works Spreadsheet:

On the File menu, click Open.
In the Files of type list, click Excel SS (*.xl*).
Click to select the Excel document you want, and then click Open.

Having jumped in without enough info will try to find out Works version, though that will not be tonight.
Thanks VoG

Had a further mail.

My friend is running Works version 4.5 for Windows 95 on a computer with 98 as the O/S.

Any suggestions on how Excel files can be opened and worked on in that set up gratefully received!!

I think that with that version of Works they would need to have saved the Excel files in an earlier Excel format click here

You should be able to save the Excel file in many formats. csv is probably the best one. This would be readable and editable by any Spreadsheet programme and resaved.

I run Office2k and am able to save workbooks in any form down to version 4.

If you know anyone who has Office2k [the same would apply in 97 I assume] then email the workbook to them , get it converted and mail it back.

Thanks for the responses. The problem is that the files have been saved as .xls on a floppy. She is in France, without access to Office97 or 2000, so there is no easy way to convert them.
As the files can't be that big I have suggested that she send me the files, I'll convert them to csv or wks then send them back to her.
Thanks for your help.
