constantly freezing screen on start up

I have an Amd K6 computer. 96 ram 20 gig. No real big programmes really. I have windows Me; Office 2000. No big games. Every time I add something to the computer it tends to go slower. Now when boot up it is terrifyingly slow and often now it the screen will freeze when it reaches the desktop. The mouse freezes as well.
Can anyone out there help?

start - run - type msconfig and press return. you should have a series of tabs - click on the top right hand one - startup. take the tick out of all the boxes except your virus checker and a firewall if you have one. reboot and you will get a screen saying special startup - put a tick in the box dont warn me again. all should now be quicker.
