constant acquiring network address issue

I'm a mite confused...I have an oldish laptop running XP SP3, it belonged to my company prior to my retirement and has lots of company type policies on it..to cut a long story short I tried to remove these but just kept getting deeper into the do do..gave up and did a restore..only problem is that it now wont connect to my wireless router (SKY)..keeps saying acquiring network address. Now I've looked at previous answers to this query and tried a few to no avail...thing is whilst I'm wrestling with all this I accidentally hit the internet icon and got onto the internet..I can also get onto my email....if I'm not connected to the router how the heck is this happening...?

even more confusded now.....went into internet options / connections / lan setting and switched the flag to 'automatically detect settings' on..rebooted and all seems ok...this is the very flag i had to switch off to get it to even try to acquire a network address...

I'll put solved against this this but I'm still scratching my head..
