connection problem

hi,i have had a nightmare with talk talk,lost my internet connection,after about 8 hours off phone calls to level 2 and turning my pc upside down,it finished up with a engineer's visit,who fitted a new master socket and badly corroded outside junction box.

everything seemed fine,but now my desktop has spells where it will not connect and says web page cannot be displayed,when i click on diagnose button it says

reset local area connection adapter.
local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

using my laptop on same set-up there is no problem
i think it is something that they advised me to change in command prompt.i am using a wired modem and have windows 7 os.can anyone offer any solutions please,nice and simple.thanks.
