Connection dropped when switching identities in OE

We are with Virgin 24/7 and recently found that we couldn't connect to the internet. I created a Pay and Go account in order to get online so that I could use the online connection properties resetting facility on the Virgin site (which created a new connection in Dial-Up Networking. I deleted the old connection as it was redundant. This solved the problem of getting online but now, when we switch from the second identity to the main identity in Outlook Express, the connection gets dropped and we have to reconnect. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Can you not resolve this in IE by going to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Advanced > untick "Disconnect when idle for...minutes"/"Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed", click OK?

It seems to want to use a different connection completely. It's as if the main identity doesn't recognise the new connection even though it is, essentially, the same connection.
