Connecting xp to win98 on PC

Is it possible to connect my XP machine to a PC that has win98 on it. I want to clean my mate's pc and want to take some of his files and put them on mine incase it goes worng!!!! I know i could take the hardrive out and put it in as a slave but i wanted to to try it through the modem if that was possible. his pc does not have any usb ports either. thanks for any help

You may get a better response in the Network forum, but basically, you need a network card in each PC. Connect them together with a cross-over cable, then start the Network Wizard in Control Panel.
