connecting to a wifi hotspot.. what do i need

Stuck a PCMCIA network card in my lappy.. went to my local Burger King which has a FREE hotspot...it showed the signal coming in to my laptop.. at a good strength. Question.. what else do I need in my lappy to access the internet? Do I need an ISP access program (e.g Wanadoo) already in my machine? And do I then just click on the Wanadoo icon to get connected?
Another thought.. how do the non-free hotspots (e.g BT THE CLOUD etc) get their money. Mibbe somebody out there could point to a web page that explains all this. Thanks in anticipation guys/gals
