Connecting Storage Device

I have a home built system, which behaves fine no problems. When i try to add a maxtor 40gb via USB 2.0, the behavior goes haywire, sometimes locking up in different programs, rebooting may be ok for a short while then plays up again. disconnect the maxtor and all proceeds fine. After connecting the drive, all appears well in My Computer. the drive is recognised as Drive D and E. ( I had partitioned the drive on a previous system). What do you think is the problem? The System is as follows.
Motherboard Asus A7V8X-X
Proccessor Athlon XP 2400
Ram 768mb
Harddrive 30gb

i am no expert but my ADSL modem fails to work on a USB 2 port so I had to install a USB 1 card for it. I know that USB2 is reversable but in my case it didn't work.

Just a thought.
