Connecting 'standard' DVD player to PC

A friend who does not own a tv (there are a few!) has been offered a 'standard' DVD player (ie a through-the-tv model). He's asked if it can be connected to his children's PC to enable them to watch on the monitor. I don't know, but imagine it would be simpler to but a DVD drive for their PC. Any ideas?

If the PC has video and audio in, I think that it would be possible. But because the price of a DVD for the PC is so cheap, I think it would be the easier option.

An internal DVD-ROM drive for around £20-25 plus a copy of PowerDVD or similar would be the simplest and most elegant solution.

Just make sure to keep the kids out of the registry....
