Does anybody know of any software that will enable my WXP'd PC to talk to my WXP'd laptop via the USB2 cable?

tx, imarcus.

You could use a USB 2.0 networking cable like the "Super DataLink" at the bottom of this page: click here.

Sorry, I just realised I misread your question - if the cable you have is a standard USB cable, I don't know of any way you can transfer files over it by installing software. As far as I know, the only way is to use a USB networking cable instead, which usually come with their own transfer software.
