Connecting 2 PC's via ethernet

I have to tranfer a large file (1gb) from my laptop to my desktop but the wireless connection always drops out (haven't got a clue why!).
Does anybody know if theres anyway of connecting my machines using ethernet to transfer the files?

Any help is much appreciated

you will need a crossover cable from pcworld, it costs about £3.75

I have a crossover cable but when I connect them the network connections just say 'Network cable unplugged'

Moorie - Thanks for the link, can you just transfer 1 file on this or does it sync all of the files?

if my memory serves me correctly you select the individual folder you want to transfer/share

You could perhaps get a big enough flash drive and move the file this way.
