Connecting 2 laptop PC's to share files

My wife wants to connect her laptop to her new business associate's laptop, so that they can share files. The machines can be hard-wired, ie it doesn't need to be wireless access. An alternative may be for my wife to invest extra and have a server that they both connect to, ie a third PC. What method is simplest for each option? Please (!)

The easiest way is to connect using ethernet cross over cables.note they must be connected by cross over cables, not straight forward connecting cables.

These are available very cheaply, and allows you to set up a cable network between the two laptops.

assuming of course you have ethernet sockets on each machine, which is normal
