Could take several cd-r's Rocker.

Do you have a wireless connection ?

If you load Acronis 7 onto his lappy and make the recovery program, then you could transfer the file to your pc by Wireless or by connecting an ethernet cable. Then burn to disc's.

The Acronis help screen suggests that you can recover from a network share disk. I do know from my own experience that it is easy to restore from an external usb drive. Consider whether you should invest in one and maybe share the use of it so that either could use it in the case of needing to restore (unless your son is geographically to far away to make this feasible).
