config.sys file missing or corrupted

  GPC 22:20 02 Jul 07

My Toshiba laptop, XP (home edition tells me that the config.sys file is wither missing or has been corrupted.
It advises me to insert the system disc and press "r" for repair.
When I insert the disc, I get a message telling me that by continuing, the hard disc will be be reformatted with total loss of date.
Surely there is a better way?
Has anybody got a suggestion?

Also check if you have a recovery partition. This sometimes gives you the option of a repair.

Normally tapping F11 on startup will show you the recovery/restore partition if availble.
