concerns over premium rate hijack scams

Dont believe I am suffering from this but am paranoid about it. I have McAfee firewall and norton AV and run spybot and adaware. Just wondering what the risks were and how to avoid them. Im on broadband so I presume if I was hijacked to a premium rate dial up I would see it all slow down.
Im a bit ignorant about this but have read some horror stories.

Seems a lot of people share these concerns. I feel a bit more secure about my broadband connection now.At least with that problem.
