Computers can access the web but not each other

  gudshep 11:11 09 Nov 10

On one computer (Office1) if I look at the network I can see John (laptop), Office1 and George (second computer)
On the second computer (George) if I look at the network I can only see John-Acer and George but not Office1.
All three computers can go on the web and send and receive emails but Office1 and George cannot communicate.
Office1 is Windows 7. George is XP.
It worked up to last week and I can’t think of anything that has changed.
Any ideas?

If you're using a third-party firewall, such as Zone Alarm, have you specified the IP addresses of the networked computers? If so, and if the IP addresses are allocated by DHCP from the router, these *could* have changed, so that the firewall is no longer allowing them access.

Thanks for trying to help,
I have tried system restore on both computers but it made no difference.
It may well be something to do with IP addresses, but it sounds as if I am out of my depth here.

I had a similar problem. Go into Search and look for Computers or people/A computer on the Network/Search. With my setup it found the not communicating PC. Click on it and drag onto your Network folder listing showing connected PC's. Try it. Ensure that they are all on the same workgroup.
