computer wont shut down

suddenly i am finding my computer will not shut doen, and i have to turn it off completely. I am using windows xp home addition and aol. 9.0. can anyone help please?

The last time I had a shutdown problem it was due to Norton checking the floppy drive prior to shutting down. As there was no disk in the drive, Norton just hung there waiting for a response.

When faced with this problem I:

> run - msconfig - disable all non-system essential programs from the start up.

> shut down - turn on see if it shuts down with programs disabled, if so then you have a driver confict.

Start turning programs back on one by one a find the culprit.
