When I start up my PC the Computer window opens up on my desktop, displaying hard drives, removable storage ect.

I might be mistaken but I put this down to updating Kaspersky 10 to 11, is this possible? it seems to have started after this change.

Can anyone tell me how to stop this happening, running Win vista.

Try---
In Windows Explorer or Control Panel,
click Tools in the Menu bar,
click Folder Options,
click View tab,
in Advanced Settings list, find and Uncheck
"Restore previous folder windows at logon"

This problem occurs when some programs modifies the Userinit registry key, or if there is a registry change in the Userinit value.
You may need to repair windows registry key to solve this problem, change the Userinit registry key value to fix this trouble.

1. Start menu >> Run or press window + r , this will open the run prompt

2. Type “regedit” ( without quotes ) and press Enter , this will open registry editor

3. Now, navigate to the following registry key in registry editor

HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

4. Double click the Userinit registry key and delete the value C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, ( The comma at the end of the value should also be there).

leave only:

C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

5. Exit registry and restart your computer to see the change into effect

gengiscant,

I must be doing something wrong (not unusual) when I open win explorer I cannot see tools, same applies to control panel.
I opened win explorer by entering text into search box after going to start.

Did that,

when you say,

leave only:

C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

that is all the text there was there.
