Computer switching off at random

Before selling my laptop to my parents 5 months ago I used the recovery disk to wipe my stuff and give them a stable system.

It hasn't been all that stable. There was a problem with it hanging which uninstalling Norton Anti-Virus cured. Now, recently, it won't connect to the internet or if it does it drops it pretty quickly and won't reconnect. Line seems to be okay. Then the last fortnight, it's started switching off at random; just Bing! and its gone.

Fed up, I decided to use the recovery disk again and go back to the beginning. It did the first part and I ejected the floppy but in the second part when the screen says "Windows Audit 1 - setting up your system..." it is still switching off, so it won't complete the recovery. It stays at this part for 10-70 minutes before going off.

How should I best proceed?

Many Thanks
