Computer switches off then boots up immediately

  StephenRogers 20:15 28 Jun 06

My PC keeps turning itself off and going through the whole start up process at diiferent intervals.

- got broadband a couple of months ago - USB modem from Tiscali
- didn't update norton for about a month (had trouble renewing subscription)
- been running game (call of duty) on broadband multiplayer.

Recently this switch off thing started happening - got progessively worse - eventually Windows XP wouldn't load - repaired XP, virus scanned all drives, but it's still happening (though not as often)
any ideas?

Overheating can cause problems like that, StephenRogers, check all your fans, especially the Processor fan, make sure they are working.

Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under Startup & Recovery, click Settings. Under System Failure, untick the box in front of Automatically restart.

The next time it crashes you should get a message on a blue screen. post it here.

...and am now waiting for the next failure...

MAJ - is there a way of checking the fans are working without opening the box?

I've got 1 fan working and 2 at 0 rpm

The ones at 0 rpm may not be fitted how many fans in your system?

There will be one on the CPU but you may not have any others.
