Computer Power Shuts Down

Still leaves the light on motherboard on.

The shutdown is random but normally happens in first 30 mins.

To get it restarted I have to remove power lead until motherboard light goes out & then reconnect & start.

It will run indefinitely with the ethernet cable disconnected!

I have done the following:-

Removed all front switches & reset switches.
Applied new paste to the CPU fan (in case of heat probs)
Cleaned the case inside.
I have reformatted the C drive & reloaded windows.

Apart from buying a new power supply I cant think of anything else- but why does it run when no ethernet connected?

This is a tricky one.

After all that you have tried, have you looked at the power options? These may have changed somehow?

Yeh- been trhough them. disabled anything thats auto shuts power down. Gone back to basics.

Just scratching my head now.

You could try disconnecting the NIC to see if this is causing the problem.

Sorry forget that suggestion as you would need the NIC to connect to the network. Have you tried reseating the NIC?

tried using a different PSU?
what size is your PSU?

  cragulas 23:27 21 Nov 08

PSU is 400W been working fine for 3 years.

Havnt tried a new one yet as Im trying to exhaust all other possibilities before shelling out on one

Havnt got an NIC its onboard

  rossgolf 23:57 21 Nov 08

well, ive never had a PSU that has lasted 3 years,so that could be the cause of it.

you must be very unlucky, I'm still using machines upto 20 years old with the same power supplies.

Tried disabling old on board / ethernet card and fitting another?
