Computer Keyboard to Music Keyboard

Years ago, on my Amiga500 I remember having a program which would let you load sound files into memory and play them on your computer keyboard.
i.e: you'd load in a synthesizer sample press Q W E R T Y (whatever) and the tune would come out of your speakers. You could also record your efforts.
Is there a PC equivalent?

Was it Soundtracker, Protracker? I can't remember.

Are Soundfonts anything to do with it? Or is that something different?
