This is whats happening, I am on WINXP Pro Pentium 2 :

Logged on, received messages as usual , all O.K.
My wife wanted to scan some music and went into the programs and clicked on scanner. It prompted her to insert the scan disc.
Unfortunatley she installed the HP Scanjet Scanner software that was on the ME Edition.
It installed and asked her to shut down then start up again.

This is when the problem starts. When we start the computer up it does what it normally does, i.e. all checks and then goes onto the page with our 4 names on it. When you go to any of the individual user settings it opens it up for about 5 seconds and then the system shuts down and then re-boots on it's own. This just keeps repeating over and over again.

Any suggestions please techies ???

Can you boot up in Safe Mode? To do this restart and keep tapping F8 before the Windows screen loads and delect Safe Mode from the menu that appears.

Then try System Restore back to a time before this happened.
