Computer hangs after RAM upgrade

Hi, can anyone help? Current set up: ASUS A7N266-VM Motherboard, Athlon XP1800+ Processor, 512Mb RAM (2x 256Mb), WIN 98SE. Decided to install more RAM (2x 512Mb). On rebooting PC the RAM is recognised, Windows splash screen comes up, then it hangs on the black screen that tells you the PCI components. After re-setting the computer it starts in safe mode (1024Mb RAM recognised on system performance tab) but I don't really know enough about computers to know what to do in 'safe' mode or otherwise. I have re-inserted old RAM and everything works fine - any ideas??

Windows 98SE will not work with over 512mb ram

How much would it cost to upgrade to XP? Can you simply buy an 'upgrade'Cd? Is it easy to do, do you have to backup etc??

On e-buyer they have an offer of XP Home OEM for about £56 but you have to buy a peripheral as well but you can buy a mouse for about £2.
You have to buy a peripheral because they cannot sell OEM products on their own

Thanks alan227 - I shall have to do more research before I try 'simple' improvements!!
