Computer gone wrong. Help!

My brother's PC started having trouble after he upgraded his ZoneAlarm. He said picture files couldn't be previewed & could only be seen when copied into Word. So he decided to uninstall ZoneAlarm. That's when other things started going wrong as well. Applications couldn't be launched & it started hanging. Tried System Restore a couple of times to no avail. Then IE wouldn't launch despite being able to connect to the internet. When attempting to launch applications, only the initial splash screen (where it tells you what application you're launching & what version) & stops. He managed to launching AVG antivirus & Ad-aware & scan the PC, but it came up with nothing. Tried Norton SystemWorks WinDoctor, which seemed to fix a few things, but still the same problems. What could it be??

Try going to Start > Run, type in:

sfc /scannow

note there is a space after "sfc", that space is required. Click OK and let Windows repair or replace any corrupt or missing files. You might need your Windows CD.
