Computer does not recognise flash memory

  Seadog 17:11 15 Feb 06

I have a portable USB 40Gb hard drive that I use on my laptop, however since using it on my desktop to transfer some large files, if I now insert a USB flash memory stick into any USB port on the desktop it thinks it is a removeable drive rather than flash memory and when I try to read info from the stick I get the message "insert a disc into drive (E)"
Any ideas how to reset it (or whatever) so that the desktop recognises the flash memory for what it is? I have a couple of flash sticks that I use for back-ups but can't use at the moment!!
