computer is closing down to protect your files

I do not have access to the PC but it is probably '98se.

"This computer is closing down to protect your files" This came up on a black (probably DOS) screen. The PC Closed down.

It will no longer boot - Even in safe mode. There are no bleeps when you turn it on

She put it down to age and a recent attempt to install AOL 9.

Apparently there were no hints that this might happen, noises or otherwise.

Local wise(fast talker)guy, says she needs a new PC, which he will build, and he can't recover anything from the old HDD.

I don't believe him!

All I am looking for is a balance of probabilities.

It was 98se - Upgraded to XP Pro.

It boots to the black screen that offers Safe Mode, but when Safe Mode is selected the screen appears to rotate and returns.

It does not then open in Safe Mode.

Try Last Known Good Configuration from that boot menu screen.

I have no idea how long before I can add a response, so I shall have to leave it open till then.

The old PC was her ex-husbands, so he got it back.

Thanks for your thoughts.
