Would installing Onspeed, to speed up a "3" dongle broadband, actually work? Are there any free alternatvies available to see what effect they would have?

I have used Onspeed since when I used to have dialup, when it was good, and I still have it now I have broadband, however, I will not be renewing it at the end of the current subscription. I have done online speed tests and found that when it is in operation it actually slows my downloads, but it doubles the upload speed. Both these are reversed when I disable it. If you send a lot of photo's etc in emails, it may be useful, I don't, so I would rather have a better download speed for surfing etc.
